Hull FC have certainly laid down the gauntlet to Super League rivals early doors, with a comprehensive 38-12 victory over Huddersfield Giants, in Round 1 of the 2018 BetFred Super League campaign.
The black and whites did take a cautious approach in the beginning however, as Marc Sneyd slotted over 2 penalties in the opening 7 minutes at the KCOM. Ultimately, this gave Hull a false sense of domination when Huddersfield went and scored two quick back-to-back tries to take a 12-4 lead.
The Giants clearly the stronger team for the remaining 30+ minutes of the half, but it wasn’t without a hiccup as Hull’s 2017 player of the year, Albert Kelly forced his way over from close range to reduce the deficit to only 10-12 at the hooter.
Hull kicked-off the second-half fiercely, as Fetuli Talanoa made the most of a Marc Sneyd 40/20, forcing his way over from close range to give Hull FC the lead for the first time in the game. Sneyd converting the extras to give Hull a 16-12 lead.
Not long after, Tuli was in for the second of the evening, collecting a precision-sharp Marc Sneyd chip into the corner and beating the Huddersfield defence to increase Hull’s lead.
The game began to look beyond the Giants as former Huddersfield man Jake Connor scored Hull’s fourth try of the evening on the hour mark, with Lee Radford’s half-time team talk clearly having a positive effect on his side.
Futuli was then back on the score sheets once more to complete his hat-trick, as Hull really began to click and put Huddersfield to the sword. Sneyd kicking his seventh goal of the evening to convert Tuli’s third.
Jamie Shaul then joined the try-scoring party, beating Jake Mamo to a high bomb to score his first of the season, and Hull’s sixth to take the hosts’ lead to 26 points.
All in all, a solid start for Lee Radford’s men, with a trip to New South Wales now firmly on the black and whites agenda.
